Viewing and editing files in the browser

Most files in Crux Cloud open without downloading anything. Select a file to open it in the built-in viewer.

What opens directly

  • Images — full size, with zoom.
  • PDFs and documents — read in place.
  • Audio and video — play in the browser.
  • Text and code — displayed with syntax highlighting.

Editing text and code in place

Text-based files can be edited directly in the viewer. Make your changes and save, and the file updates in Cloud — no download-edit-reupload cycle. Because every save creates a version, you can undo a bad edit later from version history.

File details

The info panel shows size, type, when it was uploaded and last changed, and its current sharing state. For music and photos it also shows the metadata that was read out of the file — artist, album, and year for audio; camera details for images.

Converting images

Image files can be converted between formats from the file menu. Supported conversions are between PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, and BMP — for example a PNG screenshot down to a smaller WebP or JPG.

Conversion applies to images only. If the option is missing or greyed out, the file is not an image, or its format is not one of the five above. Documents and audio are not converted by Crux Cloud.

Converting creates a new file rather than replacing the original, so both count against your storage. Delete the one you do not need.
