Running out of space: how to free up storage

Every Crux Cloud account has 25 GB, and it cannot currently be increased. When uploads start failing, work through this list in order — it is roughly sorted by how much space each step tends to reclaim.

1. Empty the Trash

Deleted files keep using your quota until the Trash is emptied. This is the single most common reason someone deletes a lot and sees no change in their usage. Check Trash first.

2. Look at Storage analytics

Storage analytics shows your usage by file type and lists your largest files. A handful of videos or disk images usually accounts for more space than thousands of documents.

3. Deal with video and audio

Media is almost always the bulk of a full account. Download anything you want to keep but do not need online, then delete it from Cloud.

4. Find duplicate copies

Copying a file into another folder stores it twice. If you have been copying rather than moving, there may be a lot to reclaim. The CruxAI panel can help identify duplicates.

5. Check for leftover conversions

Converting an image creates a second file and keeps the original. If you have converted a batch of images, the originals may still be there.

6. Do not forget the Vault

Vault files count against the same quota. Unlock the Vault and check it — it is easy to overlook precisely because it is hidden.

What does not help

  • Unsharing files — shared files only ever count against the owner's quota, so revoking access frees nothing.
  • Deleting playlists — playlists hold no audio; the files stay.
  • Removing tags or stars — these are labels, not copies.
  • Emptying your CruxAI sandboxes — sandbox storage is metered separately and does not touch your Cloud quota.
