The photo library and searching photos by what is in them

The Photos view is a gallery of every image in your Crux Cloud, grouped by date with the newest first. It is a much better way to browse pictures than the file list.

Fast browsing

Photos loads cached, resized thumbnails instead of full images, so a large library scrolls quickly and uses very little data. The full-resolution file is fetched only when you open a photo.

Searching by what is in the picture

This is the part worth knowing about. Search matches the filename, and — where the visual index has been built for your library — it also matches a cached description and keywords for each photo.

In practice that means you can search for what the photo shows rather than what it is called. Terms like "receipt", "whiteboard", "dog on a beach", or "screenshot of a spreadsheet" will find images whose filenames are meaningless strings from a camera.

Getting more out of it

  • Describe the subject, not the occasion. The index knows what is visible in the image; it does not know it was your sister's birthday.
  • Try a couple of words rather than a sentence.
  • If a search finds nothing, fall back to the date grouping — you usually remember roughly when a photo was taken.
Images stored in your Vault are deliberately excluded from the photo library and are never indexed. That is the point of the Vault.
