Every file in Crux Cloud starts private. There are two separate ways to change that, and it is worth knowing which one you are using.
Sharing with a specific person
Choose Share on a file and enter their Crux ID username — not their email address. Crux Cloud identifies people by username, and email addresses are never exposed through sharing.
You then choose their access level:
- View — they can open and download the file.
- Can edit — they can also change it.
The file appears in their Shared with me view. It does not consume their storage quota — a shared file counts only against the owner's.
Public links
Setting a file's visibility to public generates a share link that works for anyone who has it, signed in or not. This is the right tool for sending something to a person without a Crux ID, and the wrong tool for anything sensitive: a public link is a password, and anyone it is forwarded to has the same access.
The three visibility states
- Private — only you.
- Shared — specific Crux ID users you named.
- Public — anyone with the link.
Reviewing and revoking
Open a file's share settings to see everyone it is currently shared with. Remove any individual person, or set the file back to private to revoke everything at once, including the public link. Revoking is immediate; a previously copied public link stops working.
Files already downloaded by someone else cannot be recalled. Revoking access stops future access, not copies that already left.
If sharing options are unavailable
Accounts with parental controls applied can be prevented from sharing files publicly or by link. A restricted account can always set a file back to private — the restriction only blocks exposing files, never securing them.
