Canvas: a workspace for code and long-form writing

Canvas is a docked workspace that opens beside your conversation. Instead of scrolling back through chat to find a block of code or a draft, the working copy lives in Canvas where you can read it, preview it, and revise it in place.

Opening Canvas

  • In the composer, select the + (Tools) button and choose Canvas.
  • Or select Open in Canvas on any response that contains code or a document.

Once Canvas is active, code and long-form output from CruxAI appears there automatically. Drag the left edge of the panel to resize it.

The three tabs

  • Code — the working file, with its filename and language shown in the bar underneath.
  • Preview — renders HTML inline so you can see the result without leaving the page. Use the refresh button to re-render after a change.
  • Diff — shows what changed from the previous version.

Versions

Every revision CruxAI makes is kept. The version selector at the bottom of the panel lets you jump back to an earlier version, and the Diff tab shows exactly what changed between them. Nothing is overwritten silently.

Working on part of a file

Select any text inside Canvas and a small toolbar appears with four actions:

  • Explain — ask what the selected section does.
  • Fix — point CruxAI at a specific problem area.
  • Improve — request a better version of just that selection.
  • Ask — ask a free-form question about the selection.

This is usually faster and more accurate than describing the section in chat, because CruxAI receives the exact text you highlighted.

Getting the file out

Use Copy all to put the whole file on your clipboard, or Download file to save it locally. Canvas work is also saved to your Library under Canvas Artifacts, so you can reopen it later from a different conversation.
