Files in a Space and how they relate to Crux Cloud

Files in a Space work differently from an ordinary file attachment, and understanding the model prevents most confusion.

One file, one original

A file shared into a Space is not copied. The original stays in the uploader's Crux Cloud, and the Space holds a link to it. That means:

  • Editing the file updates the single original — there are no diverging copies.
  • The file counts against the uploader's Cloud storage, not everyone's.
  • Sharing the same file into several Spaces still stores it once.

Adding files

  • Add from Crux Cloud — pick files you already own; the originals are shared without uploading duplicates.
  • Upload a file from your device.
  • Create and edit here — make a new file directly in the Space. It is stored in your Crux Cloud and shared with the Space.

Creating a file in the browser

Name the file and pick a type: a rich document (.cruxdoc), Markdown (.md), plain text (.txt), or a code file — HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, JSON, Python, PHP, SQL, Java, C#, C++, Go, Rust, or shell. It opens straight into the editor.

Space folders

Folders organize this Space only. Moving a file into a Space folder changes where it appears in the Space and does not move the original in anyone's Crux Cloud. Folder names update for every member.

Editing

Text and code files under 2 MB can be edited in the browser. You can edit a file if you uploaded it, or if your role grants edit shared documents or manage all files.

Removing a file — the two options

Removing a file asks you to choose, and the difference matters:

  • Remove from Space — unlinks it here. The original stays in Crux Cloud and links in other Spaces are unaffected.
  • Delete from Space & Crux Cloud — moves the original to Cloud Trash and removes every Space link. Only the owner of the Cloud original can do this.

If the file is not yours, you can always remove it from the Space, but you cannot delete someone else's original.
