Response settings change how CruxAI writes without changing what it can do. They apply to every new conversation until you change them. Find them in Settings -> How CruxAI responds.
CruxAI style
The style sets overall tone and expertise framing:
- Default — general purpose.
- Coder — assumes technical fluency, leads with the code.
- Writer — prose-focused, attentive to structure and voice.
- Tutor — explains reasoning step by step rather than just answering.
- Analyst — evidence first, tradeoffs made explicit.
- Concise — strips everything that is not the answer.
- Custom — write your own instructions, up to 2,000 characters.
Custom is the one worth spending time on. Be specific about behavior and boundaries — "respond like a senior engineer doing code review: direct, no preamble, name the tradeoffs" works better than "be helpful."
Preferred tone
Balanced, Casual, Professional, Enthusiastic, Concise, or Creative. Tone stacks with style, so Coder + Casual reads very differently from Coder + Professional.
Response length
- Concise — short answers by default.
- Balanced — the default.
- Detailed — fuller explanations and more context.
You can always override the default in a single message by asking for more or less detail.
Automatic Think routing
The toggle at the bottom of the tab — Automatically use Think when needed — lets CruxAI move a Fast conversation into Think when a request genuinely needs deeper reasoning. Turn it off and CruxAI asks first instead of switching on its own.
