Why you were signed out

Being returned to a sign-in page is usually routine rather than a problem. Here is what causes it.

Ordinary reasons

  • The session expired. Sessions do not last forever; leaving a tab open for days will eventually require signing in again.
  • You signed out elsewhere. Using Sign out all others in the account portal ends every other session, including on your own devices.
  • You changed your password. Existing sessions are ended, which is the correct behavior.
  • You changed your 2FA settings. Same reasoning.
  • Browser data was cleared. Clearing cookies removes the session. Some browsers do this on quit or in private windows.

The session-expired page

Landing on the session-expired page simply means your session is no longer valid. Sign in again and you will normally be returned to where you were. Nothing has been lost — CruxAI conversations, Cloud files, and Spaces content are all stored on your account, not in the session.

If it keeps happening

  • Check your browser's cookie settings. Blocking third-party cookies, or clearing cookies on exit, will sign you out repeatedly. Crux products span several subdomains and rely on a shared session cookie.
  • Private or incognito windows discard everything on close by design.
  • "Clear on exit" extensions and privacy tools do the same thing. Add the Crux domains to their exception list.
  • Signing in on many devices can push out older sessions. Sign out of devices you no longer use.

When it is worth investigating

If you were signed out and did not do any of the above, treat it as a possible security event:

  1. Check Active Sessions in the account portal for anything you do not recognize.
  2. Select Sign out all others.
  3. Change your password.
  4. Turn on two-factor authentication if it is not already on.

A new-sign-in alert email you did not trigger is the clearest sign that someone else has your password.
